I am just excited to make my dreams come true, says Sofie - INTERVIEW

First of all, the song may sound like a sassy, party/dance-y song, but the message is much deeper - I also think that the acoustic performance that we did here at (A)void Sessions helped express the message of the song. Honestly, I’ve been in a constant circle of feeling confident and then feeling insecure and then confident again probably my whole life. I am sure many people feel like this and it is mainly because of our judgmental society, so I just felt like I needed a break from all the judgment and talking and criticising and that’s when the song came to life. I simply just needed to say GIVE US A BREAK, let us live, let us do what we want…for all of us.

Marie: Sofie, how did you get to writing songs, playing music and since when have you been performing?
I have always been into music, ever since I was little. I have literally been performing since I was a kid - If I wasn’t singing, I was performing as a dancer or acting in school plays. Singing/writing songs is something that comes very naturally to me - I have always known I wanted to be a singer and every artist that influenced me on the way has been a songwriter as well, so I never actually thought about NOT writing my songs - it’s pretty much simple - I need to express my feelings - I write a song. I finally started my “official” singing career last Autumn.

Marie: You already have a footprint in the scene in Prague. How would you describe the music scene in Prague?

Interesting question! From what I’ve learnt so far, the community of musicians is very supporting, which I love. I try to be as supporting as I can as well and I suppose I expect that sort of energy from others. There are so many interesting and talented musicians and I love that there are opportunities such as Avoid Sessions that help people from the music scene show what they’ve got!

Marie: You released you single “give us a break” earlier this year. What is the story behind the song and what was your inspiration for this?

Thank you for asking!

Marie: Are your songs autobiographical or do they come from your imagination, or both?

Some bits may come from my imagination but even those are always based on real life feelings and events.

Marie: Are you planning any new releases this year? Tell us about your plans.

I am planning a very special release very very soon! I think I can say that my debut EP will be released in a few weeks and I couldn’t be more excited for everyone to hear it.

Marie: You’ve been influenced by artists some people may not be that familiar with such as Mahalia. How would you identify your conscious and unconscious influences in your music?

Well, I suppose the conscious influences are the ones that I’ve been constantly listening to from a very young age, such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, Beyonce. However, I think I was (and am) unconsciously influenced by everything I have ever listened to and liked, including for example musicals that I used to listen to a lot with my father when I was little or Serbian music, which me and my mother always listened to, since she is of Yugoslavian descent.

Marie: Do you listen to much music on Spotify, and if so, what are the top releases we should check out?

I do! I rarely do anything else, haha. I would recommend checking out a few recent releases such as Jorja Smith’s new ep ‘Be Right Back’, Sinead Harnett’s new album ‘Ready Is Always Too Late’ or (and this may not be for everyone, because it’s german, but i loooove it) the new single ‘Rosenkrieg’ by my favourite german rapper Loredana (feat.Mozzik). Speaking of female rap - you should definitely check out Sawsane (Czech female rapper).  I’ve been also listening back to Dua Lipa’s  ‘Future Nostalgia’ album a lot - especially her stripped back versions sound amaaaazing!

Marie: And finally, what are your plans for life after pandemic?

I am really looking forward to traveling again, visiting my favourite cities and my family abroad, spending more time with my loved ones and last but not least, I am definitely looking forward to performing live more and singing for people. I am just excited to make my dreams come true.
